HAITANG BAY INTERNATIONAL DUTY FREE
#Business and Commercial District Planning
Location: Sanya, China
Client: China International Travel Service Corporation
Project area: 123,720㎡

Opened on September 1, 2014, the Haitang Bay shopping center is a unique project. The project is located in Sanya, Hainan Island, in the very center of Haitang Bay, one of the most attractive international tourist place, surrounded by the most prestigious hotels. Since it is the biggest Duty-Free Shopping area in the world, it stands out through its spectacular architecture.

Our design inspiration comes from the Haitang Bay flower, the symbol of Sanya. From the flower concept comes the overall master plan distribution and as well the organic and free form shape of the key buildings.

The shopping center is divided into two independent buildings connected by a monumental entrance. The two buildings, both three-story high and covered by one unique free form roof structure, will contain luxurious shops, flagship stores from the most world-famous brand, and international restaurants.

The free form roof has been modeled as an organic surface with a rhythm of glass and aluminum panels resembling the Haitang flower, not only as a design feature but as well as a key element to grant shading and protection from UV radiation to the building and its users.

The roof as well with its movement marks the main entrance of the shopping center. The main entrance is a big cover spanning more than 50-meter and 35-meter high supported by a system of big steel arches.

A 50-meter public axis of buildings directly connects the site's main entrance to the seaside. This axis hosts at its center around the central plaza on different levels, integrated with the landscape and water features.

The design team as well focused on strict sustainable design principles, focusing great attention on the facade design and optimization, the glazing systems selection and energy-saving measures.

The interior space of the shopping center has been designed using a sequence of thematic inner courts characterized by big central voids with open spaces of more than 30-meter and covered on the top by the glazed free form roof to maximize natural lighting and improve building natural ventilation.

The main building double-skin facade is facing the city street and, in order to offer the maximum visibility to the flagship stores in the front, it has been designed using full glazing structural glass facade. The rest of the facade all over the buildings is a composition of glass panels for showcase and full aluminum panels.
